Curated and Personalized
Don’t visit one shop and buy every matching piece from there; rather, pull your living room together organically, says designer Svetlana Tryaskina of Estee Design Interiors. “I aim to select pieces that make the room feel special and relaxed like it’s telling its own story,” she says. For dynamic and refreshing results, mix in traditional architectural details with contemporary furniture, lighting and artwork.

Go For Fluted Wood
Layering architectural details is a fantastic way to elevate a living room, as seen in this luxurious space by RZ Interiors. The ribbed-wood walnut wall creates a cozy, opulent feel, says designer Bahar Zaeem, and riffs off the vertical chasms in the built-ins and the wood shelves in the room as well.

Reach for Dark Hues
For a sultry twist, choose dramatic deep tones for your walls and beyond. “Dark paint colours give a feeling of warmth, enclosure and comfort,” says designer Michaela Burns of Michaela Burns Interiors. “This living room is designed for intimate gatherings, a place to focus on a book, a conversation or a movie.” The blue-grey paint colour on the walls is Benjamin Moore’s Templeton Grey and the brand’s Knoxville Gray coats the mantel.

Brass is Tops
Designer Ching Tan of Tan Interiors doesn’t exactly follow trends — she prefers timeless materials, and is happy to see brass flourishes going strong heading into 2024. “We chose brass gold for the lighting fixtures in this comfy and elegant room because it will last for generations to come,” she says. “Brass paired with neutral colour schemes brings a feeling of nostalgia and familiarity.”

Hide the Technology
Now you see it, now you don’t. That would be the TV, which transforms into art if you choose a Samsung Frame TV. It’s better than staring at a dark void, says interior designer Nancy Kuemper of Mabel Design Co. “I love using art TVs in my projects because it allows us to seamlessly blend what would otherwise be an unsightly staple equipment piece against a beautifully designed feature.” In this case, a sleek wall of Amadeus marble: seamless stone and walls and their faux counterparts are also hot this year!
Show Off Your Darlings
Beautiful, organic pottery is trending, and what better way to show it off then with carefully curated cubbies? “The open shelving here creates a relaxed and laid-back vibe for the family after a day of work and school,” says designer Christine McCulloch of Rowe Interiors. “The greenery, accessories and curated pottery brings a modern, yet approachable design aesthetic for this young family home.”

Candles Set the Mood
Candles and their holders (hello, hurricane lanterns; so nice to see you, sconces) are coming in strong for 2024. “They’re an easy and inexpensive way to light a room without hardwiring or dealing with unsightly cords,” says designer Jessica Gosbee of Jessica Gosbee Design. Candlelight is a nod to the past and imparts a super cozy vibe, says Jessica, but if fire makes you nervous, go faux. “There are battery-powered, remote-controlled options.” PS: The sconces here are from June Home Supply.
