Step One: Measure

With a 24 by 24-inch plywood board, use a pencil to freehand a wavy shape as the base, and make a square to use as the shelf.

The approximate woodcuts are:

  • Wavy base: 24 inches by 10 inches
  • Shelf: 24 inches by 4 inches

Step Two: Cut

In this step, you will cut both wood pieces with a jigsaw (or any saw you have handy at home). Secure the wood plank with clamps on a working table, put on your protective eyewear and start cutting each piece.

Step Three: Add a Decorative Finish

If rounded corners are your style, you can achieve this look easily with a wood router. Place a 1/4 inch roundover bit and trim the edges on both sides.

Step Four: Sand

As soon as all the edges are trimmed, grab a sanding block and smooth out the work you just did, making sure the dust is removed with a clean cloth at the end.

Step Five: Assemble

You can attach the shelf to the wavy base by adding a coat of wood glue and using a brad nailer. Ensure the shelf is centred and levelled with a level. Tip: If you don’t have a brad nailer, you can also use a hammer and nails.
