Ask any dog owner and they’ll tell you their dogs are part of the family. There’s a good reason these loyal, loveable pets have become our furbabies: they’re the ultimate companion. So why wouldn’t we shower them with love, toys and lavish dog rooms to call their own?
Yup, dog spaces are the latest trend taking over the design space, and we don’t hate it. That doesn’t mean we necessarily have the budget to decorate entire rooms or carve out special nooks for them though. Thankfully, for every haute trend to hit the internet there are budget-friendly alternatives to check out. And yes, that includes dog rooms. Keep scrolling for some ideas on how to put yours together for less.
Use Nooks
If you happen to live in a multi-bedroom house then maybe you have the space to give your dog their own room. Having that kind of space is a luxury in itself though, so don’t feel pressured if you need extra living quarters for a home office or roommate. Instead, look for opportunities to use the nooks and crannies in your home to make your dog extra welcome.
Use the area under a desk or bed, an awkward space in the front entrance or laundry room, or a corner in your living room or bedroom as your dog’s new specialized area. All it takes is a little imagination and creativity. Of course, the larger the dog the more space you’ll need, so keep that in mind when you’re scouting.

The Dollar Store Is Your Friend
Is it nice to source luxe fabrics, customized wallpaper and high-end finishes for a room? Of course it is. Is it necessary? No! Head to a budget store, like the local dollar store, to find the perfect finishes for your pet space. Artificial grass, wallpaper, organizing bins and jars and even art adorn the shelves at many of these stores and can go a long way in helping you craft the cutest nook or room for your fur face.
Make It Functional
Functional is fashionable, and pet rooms or spaces are no exception. If you’re designing an area for your dog, you want to be able to get the max use out of it. That includes thoughtful touches like jars to organize food and treats, baskets for toys, hooks or bowls for leashes and space for food and water dishes. A bed to sleep in is another consideration, as is an armoire or dresser for any clothes or accessories. Start with the basics, and then add those little design touches that make the space feel special.

Get Creative
Think about what makes your pet unique before you go about crafting their room or space. Does your dog perform a lot of tricks? Maybe you want to go with a magic theme. Do they snuggle a lot? Cozy and comfy may be your vibe. Love to play and go for walks? Why not incorporate outdoor vibes or a gym feel? Think about what may suit your dog’s personality best and run with it. There are no limits to creativity, and sometimes when you just go for it you get the best results.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
Comparison is the thief of joy, so don’t worry if your dog’s room doesn’t compare to some of the things you’re seeing on social media. Start small and add as you go, especially if you’re waiting to thrift the perfect piece or you only have so much money to work with. Handmade items might take more time to build, but they also tell a cooler story in the long run.
Perhaps for now, your dog space is a bed and a framed photo. That’s more than enough if that’s what works for you and your budget. Because at the end of the day, while it’s nice to lavish our loved ones with gifts and special accommodations, what they really want is our attention and love.
