Materials Required:

  • 100% cotton white blanket (or large cotton drop cloth)
  • Rainbow tie-dye kit (look for one with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet)
  • Plastic squeeze bottles (if not included in the kit)
  • Plastic table cover or garbage bags (to protect your surface – very important)
  • Rubber bands
  • Disposable gloves
  • Large zip-top plastic bag or plastic wrap
  • Water and access to a sink

Step 1: Prep the Party

Cover your workspace with plastic (tie-dye = fun chaos), fill with warm water and dye your squeeze bottles. You can also pre-wash your blanket without fabric softener to maximize dye absorption.

Step 2: Fold and Band

Lay your blanket flat, and accordion-fold it lengthwise into long strips. Once it’s all neatly folded, add rubber bands every six to eight inches. You should have a glorious stripe of colour for each section between bands.

Step 3: Tie-Dye Time

Get your gloves on because it’s time to paint, baby! Apply each dye colour to a different banded section alternating colours. Don’t stress about perfection — organic blending looks even cooler! Flip it over and repeat on the other side so you cover both ends.

Step 4: Wrap and Chill

Once the dye is applied, wrap your masterpiece in plastic wrap and let it sit overnight so the colours get nice and bold.

Step 5: Rinse and Reveal

Wearing gloves, rinse the blanket under cold water until it runs clear, then toss it in the wash alone using hot water and a bit of detergent. Dry as usual. Voilà — you’ve just made a Pride-ready work of art!
