Nothing disrupts summer plans more than a pack of mosquitoes and other little bugs that threaten to ruin a good time. Store-bought bug repellants are helpful, but often contain harsh chemicals that can irritate your skin. All natural alternatives, on the other hand, can be a helpful option for those who prefer a more organic approach to warding off pesky bugs. Better yet, you can do-it-yourself.

Making your own bug repellent may seem like a daunting task, but all it takes is a few key ingredients to bring this magical potion to life.

How to Make DIY Mosquito Repellent

To create your own bug repellent from scratch, you’ll want to focus your attention on a variety of essential oils. For example, some of the most common essential oils that repel mosquitoes include eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree, citronella, cinnamon, peppermint and cedarwood. Leveraging these oils and others repels mosquitoes, preventing them from getting too close to you.

How to Make an All-Natural Bug Spray for Your Home and Yard

If you prefer to avoid spraying anything on your skin, you can create a DIY house and yard bug repellent instead. We recommend testing your homemade spray on an extra piece of fabric, such as an old shirt or a rag, to ensure it doesn’t damage other fabrics.

Materials:

  • Glass or plastic spray bottle
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Eucalyptus essential oil
  • Citronella essential oil
  • Distilled water
  • White vinegar

Step 1: Mix 10 to 20 drops of each essential oil with 2 ounces of distilled water and 2 ounces of white vinegar.

Step 2: Shake gently to mix and spray to use.

Enjoy a Bug-Free Summer

For all the above DIY bug repellants, use them with caution, ensuring you test your sprays before applying them directly to your skin and surroundings, including clothing and furniture.

While it can be challenging to gauge the longevity and expiration of each DIY bug spray, as a general rule of thumb, make a fresh batch once the scent from the essential oil begins to fade.

Caution: When applying the DIY sprays listed in this article, be cautious not to get them in your eyes or mouth. In the event of a reaction, wash the affected area immediately with soap and water.
