Step 1: Basics and Shapes

First things first, let’s decide on your desired shape for this piñata DIY. Some of the classic options are stars, hearts or even little rectangles. Today, we are trying three different ones to experiment on colours and shapes together. You can draw your shape onto the leftover cardboard and always remember, you’ll need two identical pieces for the front and back.

Then, carefully cut out both shapes but don’t stress over perfect cutting. Small quirks add charm to this project, deal?

Step 2: A Fun 3D Adventure

Now, we are giving our DIY mini piñata its 3D structure by cutting thin strips of cardboard, about 1-2 inches wide, as they will later form the sides or “walls” of the final product. By using your painters tape, you can attach the cardboard strips along the edge of one cardboard shape, leaving a small opening to fill with surprises (or close it right away if you prefer just the mini piñata as a decor accessory).

Once the sides are attached securely, glue the second shape on top to complete the piñata structure.

Step 3: Fringe This Way!

You have successfully arrived to the final step where your piñata gets its fabulous, colorful look! Now, take your crepe paper and cut it into strips about 2-3 inches wide. Then, fringe one edge of each strip by making small cuts all along one side (this will take many, many strips of crepe paper in different colours to fill our DIY mini piñatas).

Starting at the bottom of your piñata, use the hot glue gun to attach the fringed crepe paper strips in layers. Overlap each layer slightly as you work all the way to the top. The most fun part? Mix and match different colours or create bold patterns to really bring both your piñata and personality to life.
