Scott McGillivray Transforms a Magical Algonquin Lakes Boho Boathouse

When you’re renting a vacation property on the water, odds are you want to actually see the water. That’s why one of Scott’s first orders of business was getting rid of the old window in the boathouse and opening up the view with this vibrant new look. Now you have clear, streamlined views of the gorgeous lake, a view that automatically ups this rental’s overall value.

Downstairs, Scott and Debra were inspired by light boho colours and natural elements that were representative of the water. Those included light floors and furniture with wooden and wicker accents, along with statement fixtures and even more of that continuous, gorgeous view.

Although the kitchen itself is on the smaller side, it’s still fully functional and able to comfortably seat a lot of people thanks to the island, which is a key rental feature to have. Meanwhile, updated appliances and an accompanying coffee and drinks bar to the side increase overall function (and income potential).

When you come across a custom copper range, you keep the custom copper range. Debra (and eventually Scott) fell in love with this original piece of the boathouse, especially once they polished it up and built out the fireplace below to give it even more charm. The result is a focal point that adds character and conversation, which is exactly what you want from a gorgeous rental on the lake.

Above, Scott used a heck of a lot of primer and sealer paint, but several coats later he was able to remediate the water stains and give this property a new, vibrant vibe. The light-reflecting look is definitely a mood, but so is that enlarged chandelier, which feels like the epitome of luxury.

Above, even the bedrooms underwent dreamy boho renovations to deliver unique and relaxing rooms any guest would love. Rather than bog down this bedroom with a feature wall, Scott and Debra opted for a streamlined headboard and decorative birds that fit the overall water theme. Then, some soft pink, brown and grey textiles and a wood ceiling bring that boho look together.

In the next bedroom, Scott put his “heads in beds” saying to good use with two twin beds that allow more sleeping options for potential renters. Once again he ditched a feature wall in favour of two statement headboards and some simple wall art, which keeps the space feeling open and airy.

When you’re transforming a rental property’s bathrooms, you want to establish a spa-like space that entices and relaxes renters. That’s why Scott and Debra went for this nautical-themed wallpaper and round mirrors over a double vanity in this reno. The result is a pretty and polished space that fits perfectly with the overall boathouse theme.

Where a rotted deck once stood, Scott and co. installed composite decking and sturdy new glass railings that allow for plenty of safe and sight-filled hangouts. The wraparound deck is for sure a new highlight for those looking to rent a vacation home on the water, since you can easily entertain or chill out here. Add in a few oversized deck chairs to comfortably sit and enjoy the view, and you’re good to go.

Last but not least, Scott and Debra ensured there were plenty of cottage vibes to go around at this new rental, including a practical and fun firepit area with Muskoka chairs and a deck. Now, with so many beautiful upgrades inside and out, these owners can easily ask for $600 per night during the high season. With that kind of rental income potential, they’ll have paid off this beautiful boathouse in no time.
