These Apartment Amenities Are Worth the Extra Bucks

When it comes to apartment hunting, affordability is top of mind for many renters and buyers alike. While finding a deal is important, especially with today’s rising costs of living, you shouldn’t overlook what the apartment or condo can offer outside of the basic living space. Some amenities may be worth the extra bucks — and I learned that lesson the hard way.

The first time I moved out on my own, it was in an old, creaky house in London, ON. It had its charm, including a beautiful porch for the warmer days and high ceilings. But I needed a healthy dose of patience to deal with the things I wasn’t expecting would alter my quality of living: no central air conditioning, no dishwasher and no proper parking areas for my family to use when they visited me.

Is It Worth It?

At the time, being budget friendly while house hunting was a great way to save money as a student. But years later, I learned that some amenities may push your budget but are immensely valuable in the long run. It’s important to keep in mind how maintenance fees factor in when considering extra amenities.

Often, amenities like a gym or concierge are usually maintained by the building instead of the individual unit. But other costs, like cleaning and repairs might be shared among residents through these fees. So even if you’re just renting, your landlord could pass those costs onto you through higher rent. For owners, those fees could be calculated based on the costs associated with running and maintaining the building and its common areas.

The question is, are those higher prices worth it? Below, we break down some of the most sought-after apartment features that are worth splurging on.

Built-in Shelving

Growing up, we moved into our family home with my bedroom having something I cherished for years: a built-in bookshelf. For a bookworm like me, it was the ultimate upgrade from my old bedroom. And it can be for you too! Built-in shelving does more than hold books or household decor: it gives your space character and adds a personal touch without having to spend money on extra furniture.

In-Unit Washer and Dryer

I’ve had the interesting experience of living in places that don’t have a washer and dryer space inside my living space. Instead, I’ve had to haul my laundry basket down the hall and downstairs to a laundry common area — and if you have it worse than that, it’s down the street. An in-unit washer and dryer will save you so much effort every week and make your chaotic days a bit more manageable. It might cost you more upfront, but the time you save is priceless.

Washing dishes by hand is doable, until it’s not. Picture yourself after a long day at work or school: the last thing you want to do is face a pile of dirty dishes in your sink. Having a dishwasher is a small comfort that can make a difference in the care and keeping of your space, especially for all the home chefs out there. Times I found myself without a dishwasher made me second guess cooking “real” meals just to keep dishwashing at a minimum.

Outdoor Cooking (BBQ Area)

Outdoor cooking spaces add a whole new element to apartment living. I’ve lived in a place that offered this amenity and it was perfect for when I wanted private outdoor BBQ nights with my friends or family. It will feel like an extension of your kitchen and it’s great for entertaining when you’re tired of hosting indoors.

Balcony

This one goes without saying. What’s better than having a fun outdoor feature, and even better than that — a little sanctuary? Use it to drink your morning coffee or hold a few potted plants. It’s a few extra square feet that feel like luxury, especially if you find yourself renting a smaller place in a big city. I’d always choose a place that offers a balcony knowing it adds breathing room in every sense of the word.
